During my constant computer problems I further had issues with software copy protection. Both Sibelius and Cycling 74 made it hard for me to reinstall my software a second time and would no longer let me to install these software after my third instillation. They would no longer give me the approval necessary to run the software. For close to $600 of software I realized their had to be another way.
I did some research and I soon realized that everything I was working with was available on Linux. I had switched primarily to SuperCollider at this point and had moved all of my audio recording work to the studio at Bilgi University where I work. This meant I no longer had a need to have Pro-Tools and Logic at home.
With Linux I was able to get a quicker computer for considerably less money and with the possibility of running a lighter operating system. The added bonus of free software that wasn't going to make me tare my hair out when I needed to deal with copy protection was an added bonus and saved me from having to deal with the moral gray area of software piracy. It is such a temptation.
It certainly took some time to learn how to get around. It is not a point and click system like Windows or OSX and since I had no help in setting anything up and learning how it works it took me all of 10 weeks to be fully operational again. The knowledge I gained was fantastic though. This is the point of this page, to share this knowledge so others can be encouraged to use Linux as a music platform and gt away from the capitalist operating systems and settle on socialism and community.
